The Fight Against Citrus Tragedy

 

Unfortunately, the early varieties of Meyer lemon trees were carriers of the Citrus Tristeza Virus, a deadly citrus disease that led to the destruction of thousands of citrus trees worldwide. In the 1940s, the USDA took drastic measures to stop the spread of the virus by banning the commercial cultivation and interstate transport of Meyer lemon trees.

 

However, the love for this unique citrus gem persisted, and in the 1950s, a group of dedicated scientists at the University of California, Riverside, worked tirelessly to develop a virus-free Meyer lemon tree. This new, improved variety was dubbed the “Improved Meyer Lemon Tree” and was released to the public in 1975.

 

The Culinary World’s Embrace

 

As the Improved Meyer lemon tree gained popularity, it didn’t take long for chefs and food enthusiasts to notice its extraordinary flavor. Famed chef and TV personality Alice Waters is often credited with popularizing Meyer lemons in the culinary world, as she frequently featured them in her dishes at her renowned restaurant, Chez Panisse.

 

Today, Meyer lemon trees can be found in gardens and orchards across the United States and are beloved for their sun-kissed fruits that elevate the flavor of countless dishes, from savory to sweet.
